ROBERT W. HELMS III
EXECUTIVE BOARD

Strength Through Experience
I joined the IBEW a month after graduating high school—starting out as an R1 with nothing but a hard hat, no clue what i was getting into, and the kind of confidence you only have before reality humbles you. I was proud just to be in the trade, ready to learn, earn, and prove myself. I started briefly with Contemporary Electric before jumping to T.A Beach where I'd meet some of the best people in this local and learn so much so early on.
Over the last 18 years, I’ve done just that. I’ve never stopped learning. This trade has always pushed me, and I’ve pushed back—constantly seeking refinement and chasing the challenges others might avoid. I go after the parts of the work that are less understood and less traveled. It isn’t always easy, but every hard-earned lesson has built the electrician I am today.
From day one, I went wherever the work took me. I’ve wired up everything from hospitals and stadiums to the data centers that power the world today. I’ve spent years working in the Bay Area and on the West Coast—locals known for their high standards, strong union culture, and high market share. It wasn’t always easy, but those experiences shaped the kind of electrician—and union brother—I am today.
I’ve earned a California General Electrical Certification, West Virginia Master License, Maryland and DC Master Licenses, and hold respected national credentials like NETA, NICET, and various others. Each one came with sacrifice—late nights studying, long hours on the job—but they’ve helped me grow, lead, and serve the trade at the highest level. My NETA certification, in particular, is one of my proudest achievements—earned not just through testing knowledge, but proving I could perform under pressure on critical systems where failure isn’t an option.
Throughout my career, I spent years running services and one-line feeder conduit around the country—building a reputation for taking on the big projects, large conduit and rigid. Coast to coast, I learned from some of the best hands in the trade and made my mark dominating in that space. That foundation eventually led me into commissioning for vendors on major data center projects.
Today, I run testing operations across multiple sites in Northern Virginia, performing advanced acceptance testing that brings high-dollar projects across the finish line. I do this work with Potomac Testing—an absolutely outstanding company filled with some of the most intelligent, dedicated professionals I’ve ever had the privilege to work alongside. Being part of that team continues to push me to grow and perform at the highest level.
My path hasn’t always been a straight line. I’ve faced some tough challenges—some harder than others—and had to grow through moments that tested everything I had. But I never backed down. With grit, perseverance, and a deep belief that I had more to give, I kept moving forward. Every setback became fuel, every obstacle a lesson—and each step shaped the man and tradesman I am today.
That experience taught me more than any book or blueprint ever could: how to get back up, how to stay humble, and how to stand for something bigger than myself. That same mindset is what I bring to every job—and what I’ll bring to the Executive Board.
I know what it’s like to be away from your family for weeks at a time, chasing the next check across state lines. I know the wear and tear, the pride, the grind—and what it means to hang your hardhat with honor at the end of the day.
That’s why I’m running: to represent the working electrician. To be a voice for our generation at a time when the future of our union is being written—and to help carry the legacy of the ones who came before us.
We’ve built so much already. Now, it’s our turn to help shape what comes next.
